Design Checklists - Community Reception Areas

Community Reception Areas

General considerations:

  • Clear signage - we would suggest a clear definition between school only and community access areas for marketing reasons and also to help with security.
  • Designated car parking, cycling and pedestrian access routes, which are lit at night.
  • Independently controlled heating, lighting and alarm system (may also require separate meters) Designated secure entrance (this may be the general reception area or a community reception but bear in mind you will need to fund a separate receptionist unless you use an intercom or buzzer system).
  • Separate, lockable storage for community clubs and groups for internal and external activity and pushchair storage.
  • Appropriate changing facilities (family units?)
  • Social seating area.
  • Refreshment area (this might be simply vending machines or a kitchenette area up to a licensed bar or bistro.)
  • Community office and notice boards for advertising community activity and news.
